Itinerary

Day 1 - Join trip in Amritsar

Our tour starts in Amritsar. The city is at the spiritual heart of the Sikh religion with its magnificent Golden Temple.

For those arriving in time, our tour leader will meet us in the hotel reception at 4.30pm for a welcome meeting followed by a visit to the Golden Temple. Before we enter, we'll have to remove our shoes, wash our feet and cover our heads - please bring a headscarf or you can buy one outside of the temple. The Golden Temple itself is a surprisingly small building surrounded almost entirely by tanks of holy water in which the Sikh pilgrims bathe. The atmosphere is one of incredible calm with devotees taking turns to pass through the main shrine where there is a continuous and melodic recital (known as the Akhand Path) from the Guru Granth Sahib, the holy book. We'll also visit the nearby Jalianwala Gardens, the site of the notorious massacre under General Dyer in 1919 which led to 379 Sikhs being shot from point-blank range by British troops.

If you'd like an airport transfer, you'll need to arrive into Amritsar's Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport (ATQ), around a 30-minute drive from our hotel.

If you'd like to join today's city tour, you'll need to arrive at the hotel before 4.30pm. If you're arranging your own flights, we recommend giving yourself at least one hour to clear the airport, plus 30 minutes to arrive at the hotel. The latest your flight can arrive is 3pm. If you miss the welcome meeting, our tour leader will catch you up as soon as possible.

Day 2 - Travel to Dharamsala, home of the Dalai Lama

Today we'll drive out of Amritsar and cross the plains of the Punjab before making our way up to the old British hill station of Dharamsala. Until 1959 this was a quiet unassuming town, but that changed when the Dalai Lama settled here after fleeing Tibet at the time of the Chinese invasion in October of that year.

McLeodganj is the upper part of the town situated 500m above Lower Dharamsala and is the area with the greatest Tibetan influence. It's also where we'll base ourselves for our visit. On arrival, we'll have an orientation walk which includes the Church of St John in the Wilderness, the Buddhist Namgyal Monastery known locally as Little Lhasa, and the Kalachakra Temple. On arrival, we'll have an orientation walk which will last around two to two-and-a-half hours, and includes the Church of St John in the Wilderness, the Buddhist Namgyal Monastery known locally as Little Lhasa, and Kalachakra Temple.

Total driving time will be approximately six hours (175km)

This afternoon is free for you to explore the town more at your own leisure. Alternatively, you might want to walk out to one of the temples in the surrounding hills, the closest being the Bhagsunath Temple with its small pool, attractive waterfall and spectacular views.

Day 4 - Drive to Manali via Mandi

Today, we will leave Dharamsala and continue our journey to Manali, a picturesque town surrounded by forests and mountains. Along the way, we will stop in Mandi and take a short tour through the town. Once an important stop on the salt route to Tibet, Mandi is now a small temple town that is sacred to both Hindus and Buddhists. Upon our arrival, we will take a walk to explore some of the 81 temples located in the town, many of which are situated along the banks of the Beas River.

After our visit to Mandi, we will resume our journey to Manali, where we expect to arrive in the early evening.

Total driving time will be approximately eight to nine hours (247km).

Our tour leader will also organise an optional half-day walk to some of the traditional villages to the north of Manali. Later on, you might want to bargain for a colourful souvenir or two in the local bazaar.

Day 7 - Travel through Atal tunnel to Jespa

Today we'll climb higher still as we travel from Manali to the small mountain village of Jespa. Our route takes us through the Atal tunnel, a newly constructed road that allows easier access to the region. The journey will take around three to four hours and we'll stop to visit the villages of Sissu and Tandi along the way. When we reach Jespa we'll explore the village and then relax for the rest of the day, allowing ourselves time to adjust to the gain in altitude.

Accommodation:

Grade: Comfortable Hotel

Day 8 - Free day in Jespa to acclimatise

Jespa is a small village with a population of fewer than 1,000 people. Today, we will stroll through the village and meet the local community. Additionally, we have the option to explore Khagsar Palace, a two-hundred-year-old citadel. Surrounded by dramatic mountain scenery and situated along the banks of a river, it's an ideal place to relax and acclimatize a bit more.

Day 9 - Drive to Sarchu via the Baralacha La Pass (4891m)

Today, we'll gradually travel higher as we head for Sarchu. We'll climb to the top of the Baralacha La Pass (4891m) and then descend to our campsite for the night. The large pre-erected tents are set up each summer when the Leh to Manali highway is open. They're fully equipped with beds and bedding and have ensuite toilet facilities. The ensuites bathrooms have western-style toilets and cold running water. Please note that electricity is provided via generator and is operational between 19:30 and 22:00.

The campsite will provide a welcome break on the long drive between Jespa and Leh, and is a necessary stop to break up the journey.

Accommodation:

Grade: Simple Camping

Single room available

Meals Provided: Breakfast & Dinner

Day 10 - Experience the Gata Loops on the road to Leh

We'll set off for the long drive to Leh, weaving through the breathtaking Himalayan landscape. Our route takes us over three high-altitude passes-Baralacha La (4,891m), Lachulung La (5,065m), and Tanglang La (5,328m)-offering stunning panoramic views as we zigzag through the rugged terrain.

The journey takes approximately 7 to 8, though travel times may vary due to traffic, army convoys, and scenic photo stops along the way. A highlight of our drive is the famous Gata Loops, a thrilling series of 21 hairpin bends leading up to Tanglang La, the highest point of our trip.

Leh, once an important stop on the Silk Road, is a charming town of around 8,000 people, nestled at 3,500m above sea level. Summers here are dry and sunny, while nights can be chilly. The town's Tibetan heritage is deeply preserved, reflected in its culture and traditions. Upon arrival, we'll take it easy, allowing time to acclimatize with a short orientation walk through the town.

Day 11 - Spend a day watching the masked dances at the Hemis Festival

Today we'll spend the day at the Hemis Festival, an annual celebration dedicated to the Lord Padmasambhava. Hemis Gompa, situated 48km outside Leh, is the largest and most important monastery in Ladakh, a treasure house of golden statues, gem-studded stupas, rare books and fine paintings of the Buddha.

The festival opens early in the morning with the sound of traditional long horns and drums beating from the monastery. A mural of Lord Padmasambhava is then displayed for people to worship throughout the festival. The highlight is the masked dances, known as chhams, performed by monks and depicting good overcoming evil. This is one of the biggest festivals in Ladakh and draws in thousands of pilgrims. It's also a great opportunity to spend time with locals.

Accommodation:

Grade: Comfortable Guesthouse

Day 12 - Visit monasteries at Thiksey, Tak Tak and Hemis

The predominant faith of the residents here is the Lamaistic form of Buddhism in Tibet. This is seen clearly in the monastery (gompa) architecture and by the extraordinary number of gods and demons that give order to the daily life of the community.

Today we'll have a full day of sightseeing to visit the gompas of Thiksey, Taktak and Hemis. Hemis Gompa, situated some 48km outside Leh, is the largest and most important monastery in Ladakh, a treasure house of golden statues, gem-studded stupas, rare books, and fine paintings of the Buddha.

Day 13 - Drive to Alchi via Sikh Gurudwar Pathar Sahib

This morning there's the option to visit Leh Palace before we head off on our two hour journey to Alchi.

Day 14 - Explore Saspol Caves and Rizong Monastery

Today there are a few optional walks planned. The first takes us back across the river to Saspol, then up to the nearby Saspol caves with views across the Indus Valley. The Saspol Caves are located around 60km from Leh and exhibit some well-preserved Buddhist frescoes inside. The hike up to Saspol Caves is short but it is worth noting that the route up to the caves is unpaved and steep. Due to the location of the caves, the terrain is made of pebbles and loose stones therefore sturdy footwear with grip is recommended.

This afternoon, we can take a slightly longer and very scenic route back down to the Indus Valley after a visit to Rizong Gompa and the nearby nunnery where we might see the nuns sorting and toasting barley depending on the season.

This morning we drive up to Likir Gompa, which houses some beautiful murals and is guarded by a 10-metre golden Buddha, there's also a small museum of religious artefacts to explore.

We'll then drive back to Leh, with the afternoon left free. You might opt to walk to the Shankar Gompa, a small monastery that's home to an impressive Dukar figure (Avalokiteshvara), complete with 1000 arms, each holding a weapon, and 11 heads. There might also be time to visit the ruined 17\super th\nosupersub -century Old Palace, which clings, tier by tier, to the hillside above the town.

Day 16 - Fly to Delhi and explore the city

Today we'll take an early morning flight to Delhi and transfer to our hotel. After checking in we'll begin a city tour of some of the main sights of New and Old Delhi. The Indian capital is something of a phoenix rising again and again out of its own ruins. New Delhi was the creation of the British Raj in the 1930s and our tour will take us to the President's Palace, Lok Sabha (Parliament), India Gate and the Rajpath. We'll then continue to Old Delhi and its energetic hub - the Chandni Chowk Bazaar, a jamboree of deafening barter. A short cycle rickshaw will take us to the Jama Masjid Mosque and we'll pass by the Red Fort en route.

Climate and country information

India

Climate

There is considerable variation between the different regions of India but, in general, the climate is tropical. Summer temperatures on the plains are very hot, but cooled by the South-West Monsoon, which lasts from June- September. During these months it can be very wet and therefore very humid. At altitude, temperatures can become quite cool at night even in the summer and may drop below freezing between December and February so warm clothing is necessary. In the winter, northern and mid India can be very cool, with cold evenings, so warm clothing, including plenty of layers, are essential. The south of India remains warm and sunny during the winter months.

Optional activities

The following excursions and/or activities are usually available and may be arranged locally. Estimated costs are provided below for guidance only, are on a per person basis unless shown otherwise, and may depend on the number of participants. Prices quoted are correct as of the date these tour notes were originally issued but may change at any time due to currency fluctuations. Please note: These activities are booked and paid for locally and do not form part of your Explore holiday contract.

Phey To Nimu - White water rafting on Indus River £27.00 (per person, on a sharing basis).

Clothing

Because of the high altitude temperatures in Ladakh can drop dramatically at night, please make allowance for warmer clothing accordingly. It is essential to bring waterproofs, sweater, long trousers (if walking in shorts), warm hat, gloves and sun hat.

Footwear

We strongly recommend walking in good boots. Although all the walks are day walks and optional it is worth noting that trainers and tennis shoes simply do not give the ankle support afforded by a decent pair of boots. Please bring comfortable shoes for relaxing in/evenings.

Luggage

15Kg

Luggage: On tour

One medium size rucksack or holdall and a day sack for the day. Suitcases are not recommended.

Please note on internal flights lugagge limit is 15kg.

Equipment

Sunglasses, sun cream, water bottle (at least 1 litre) and a torch. Swimwear is useful for the optional rafting.

We carry a Portable Altitude Chamber (PAC Bag) on this tour and have a supply of oxygen available if required in an emergency for anyone suffering from altitude sickness.

Tipping

Explore leader
Tipping isn't compulsory, and we work hard to ensure that our leaders all receive a fair wage. However, you might want to recognise a leader that's done a great job or really added to your trip by giving them a tip. We're often asked about the recommended amount. It's a tricky one, and down to personal preference, but we'd recommend between £15 to £20 per person per week as a guideline
Local crew
Although entirely voluntary, tipping is a recognized part of life in this region of the world. Some local staff will look to members of the group for personal recognition of particular services provided. In order to make things easier for you, your leader may organise a group's tips kitty for included activities and meals and if this is the case, they will account for it throughout the tour.
Accordingly, you should allow GBP50, approx. 4'250 Indian Rupees for group tipping.
For all non-included services and meals on your trip please tip independently at your discretion.

India

Food and drink

The costs for meals may vary depending upon location, type of restaurant and number of courses eaten and so the prices given are an average guide. Local restaurants located off the beaten track may be less expensive, whereas an upmarket restaurant located in the centre of a major city may charge more.

Foreign Exchange
Local currency
Indian Rupee Recently new 500 and 2000 rupee notes have been bought in to circulation and as the old notes are no longer accepted there have been some cash flow issues. You don't need to worry about being given old notes as it's very easy to tell the difference, the new notes are pristine in comparison with most Indian money which is fairly tatty.
Recommended Currency For Exchange
GBP/US$ are the best currency to change into local currency.
Where To Exchange
The Indian rupee is a restricted currency and it is best not to obtain in the UK as rates are very poor. You can either change money at the airport on arrival or in major towns during the tour. Your Tour Leader will advise you on the best places in each town. Both GBP and USD cash are easy to exchange at the airport and at hotels however you will be restricted to changing £60 cash at a time and it's not possible to change money at these locations using a credit or debit card.
ATM Availability
ATMs are available in most large cities in India but they are very limited elsewhere so please do not rely on this.
Credit Card Acceptance
Very rarely, only in the larger outlets.

Accommodation notes

Accommodation in India is as varied as the country itself and standards might not always meet those back home.
Service can be slow, especially when travelling with a group and a number of hotels in India don't serve alcohol due to complicated licencing laws or for religious reasons. Hot water is not always available at small properties and with a group staying, you might find the water is cooler if you're showering last. Hotels also don't usually have heating, so it can become chilly in the winter months, however, blankets will always be provided.
Due to the growth in tourism in India, it's not always possible to stay at our listed accommodation and an alternative will be found.
This tour takes us to some lesser-trodden areas in the mountainous regions of India with fewer accommodation options. In Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh in particular, accommodation is simple with basic facilities. In Leh, we stay in a small, new-build hotel built in the traditional Ladakhi style and our guesthouse in Alchi is family-run and so services may differ. Our hotels in Jespa, Manali, Dharamsala and Amritsar are all graded as standard. Note, during the summer months, high rainfall means some hotels might feel a little damp - unfortunately, this is unavoidable.
Our camp at Sarchu is specially erected each summer to accommodate travellers. It has fixed, walk-in tents, fully furnished with beds and bedding. There are small en-suite bathrooms with western-style toilets and cold running water. The camp also has a separate dining area to relax in. The one night camping has been scheduled as a necessary stop to break up the long journey between Jespa and Leh.

India

Food and drink

Can you drink the water?
The water quality is poor and therefore it is recommended to avoid drinking tap water during your trip.
