Looking for an adventure with a difference? Nepal is a land of soaring mountains, deep spirituality and an unforgettable cultural experience. Take in the sight of snow-topped peaks and fluttering prayer flags on the Annapurna trek and discover Kathmandu's colorful street markets.
Our small group tours take you right into the heart of Nepal—iconic spots like Kathmandu and Mount Everest, plus lesser-known destinations like traditional teahouses and the lush rhododendron forests on the Annapurna trail. Ready to disconnect and hit the mountains? Visit the jaw-dropping Himalayas for a once-in-a-lifetime hike, taking in views of dramatic and otherworldly mountain scenery on one of our trekking vacations in Nepal. If walking the Annapurna Massif is on your bucket list, our experienced local tour leaders will lead you on a hike through rhododendron forests, across ridges and along snow-covered passes to complete this classic walking pilgrimage. Choose to stay in a cozy, family-run teahouse or upgrade to a more luxurious stay in Ker and Downey Lodges. Either way, you can expect warm hospitality, delicious food and stunning mountain scenery. Of course, there’s Mount Everest. Hike through Sherpa villages, take in sweeping views of forested hillsides and make your way to the Everest Base Camp – culminating at Kala Patthar, more than 18,500 feet above sea level. Visit Nepal’s lively capital of Kathmandu and wander bustling backstreets lined with fruit stalls, potter wheels, temples, sacred cows and rickshaws for a totally unique sensory experience. Considering a trip to Nepal but new to Explore? We've answered some of the most-asked questions about our small group tours.
At Explore, we want our vacations to deliver memorable and amazing experiences. When it comes to air travel within Nepal, the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) alongside several international governments have repeatedly expressed concerns regarding the oversight provided by Nepal's Civil Aviation Authority. We have therefore chosen not to use any internal flights within Nepal. Instead we opt to travel by vehicle or on foot. This has the added benefit of reducing our carbon footprint, whilst also taking us closer to the breathtaking mountain scenery and the nature that Nepal is so famous for. This results in some long but scenic days on the road on some of our trips (around eight hours between Kathmandu and Pokhara, and around nine between Kathmandu and Salleri, for Everest Base Camp, for example), but we are confident that this is the right choice for you, our customers.
Spring (March–May) and fall (September–November) are the best times to go. Expect clear skies, mild temperatures and great conditions for trekking. The weather varies depending on which region you’re traveling to. The lowlands tend to be hot and humid, hilly regions generally stay cool in the summers with cold winters and cold temperatures year-round in the high Himalayas. The monsoon hits from June to September, bringing heavy rain.
Our tours are designed to suit a range of fitness levels. Everest Base Camp is more challenging due to altitude, but many other hikes are moderate and doable with good basic fitness. Each tour is graded, so you can find the right fit. Our team is on hand to support you if you have any questions regarding the activity levels required for each tour.
Yes. About half of our travelers go solo, so you'll find yourself in the company of a small group of like-minded adventurers to share your experiences with and a knowledgeable local leader. Traveling alone is a great way to travel independently without being alone.
Nepal is generally very safe for travelers. We design our tours with the safety of our customers firmly in mind. We do not use internal flights based on international safety standards, and instead travel overland for a safer and more enjoyable experience. As in any country, visitors should be vigilant against pickpocketing in crowded areas such as the capital city of Kathmandu. Traveling with an Explore group tour is a great way to ensure you remain safe as you explore this incredible country, and your local leader will be on hand to support you should you encounter any issues.
From big wows to hidden gems, our tours leave you feeling that you've really explored.
